Responsive Website Considerations

Given the focus on mobile and smart phone computing now-a-days, we rarely do a new website implementation that isn't 'responsive'.  This new-ish bit of industry jargon refers to the ability of the website template to respond to different browser dimensions, primarily focused on the width of the browser being detected and, in most cases, collapsing the content to suit.  For the smaller smart phone browser widths, this means mostly reformatting and optimising the content for vertical scrolling.

Given the large number of browser and device display combinations, from large, high-res desktop monitors to varying smart phone devices, this is no mean feat and, whilst there are some excellent responsive template frameworks available that can do a lot of the reformatting and collapsing of content by default, it is always important to realise that responsive design is also a function of the content itself.  We often say that responsive template implementation is less to do with design and more to do with simply making everything fit!

Responsive websites add another dimension to a website build and, therefore, cost, which is why using a pre-defined template framework, such as those available from YOOtheme and WS-Theme, is a great way to keep costs down for new projects.  However we're often asked by clients with existing, older websites that are not built using these frameworks to provide estimates on making their site responsive and, invariably, our recommendation is to always wait until they are ready to consider a complete re-design, at which point a new template framework can be used.  Again, the amount of effort required in responsive website template implementation is also directly related to the amount of content within the site, so sites with larger amounts of content will naturally take more time even with these foundation frameworks.

The bottom line is this. Whether or not you're processing orders, taking bookings or simply providing information to your existing and prospective customers, ease of navigation across all, main browser resolutions is key for a positive experience.
